Suddenly, the entire intersection was raided by “Security.” Not actual Security, mind you, since this intersection was nowhere near the Association, but parody “Security”—misfits who dropped down through the ceiling panels in the lobby, wearing uniforms that featured gaudy silver pinstripes and incorporated snazzy individualized flourishes, like gleaming silver boots or bright epaulets that lit up and flashed. One enterprising young person was carrying a fully functional laser rifle with a keytar grafted onto it.

For the next ten minutes, all the cast members joined together to perform a short musical entitled It’s Always Better to Not Ask Questions, featuring the breakout hit “Curiosity Is Boring,” and then without further ado, the original elevator passengers were herded into the center of the lobby, the cast members climbed into the elevators and waved goodbye, the elevator doors closed, and silence filled the lobby.

Seconds later, four pleasant dings signaled the readiness of each of the four elevators. Their doors opened, and the elevators were empty, returned to their original spotless states.

Since they’d all come to this intersection intending to switch elevators, no one wound up back in their original elevators. Carissa and Rindasy boarded the Up elevator. The doors closed.

“I hope you enjoyed that little diversion,” Carissa’s cloudlet said.

“It’s what I imagine dying feels like,” Carissa replied.

“Oh, there’s no need to be dramatic.”
